Welcome Nyah German our new Advocacy Intern for the Refugee Law in DRCongo
Nyah German focusing on Advocacy Campaigns towards the Introduction to the Parliament the New Refugee Law in the Democratic Republic of Congo
The Democratic Republic of Congo has historic challenges to manage refugees, among these challenges we have issues connected with policies. The Global Refugee Leaders Forum therefore identified the New Refugee Law as one among the priorities to advocate for, efforts were made including the partnership with Florida State University College of Law which has been so helpful in looking for interns who helped us to draft the new refugee law in DRC. In June we were informed about the desire of the Speaker of Parliament Honorable Vital Kamerhe to introduce this draft to the Parliament in order to make it a new refugee law once it is passed in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The purpose of this proposed new refugee law is to help DRC put in place a policy which clearly defines how to deal with refugees once in DRC in terms of management, to promote refugee rights, promote peace and pacific cohabitation between refugees and host communities and end 30 years tensions and wars between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo as refugees will no longer be perceived as threats neither to Rwanda nor to DRC.
At this particular moment our Intern Advocacy colleague will focus on campaigns to popularize this New Refugee Policy in the Democratic Republic of Congo and encourage members of the Parliament to vote for it once introduced in Parliament as promised by the Speaker.
This then will constitute the foundation to the effective refugee management in the Democratic Republic of Congo and therefore end conflicts between DRC and Rwanda.
We are mush hoping to see this happen, and we wish all the best to Nyah German during her stay with us.
