We welcome the United States of America sanctions against leaders of armed groups operating in eastern DRCongo
Reactions to the United States of America sanctions against rebel leaders operating in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo
On July 25th, 2024 we received information from the media that the United States of America has imposed sanctions to leaders of M23, AFC and Tweraneho armed groups operating in the eastern DRC. We welcome these sanctions and we call upon more actions to be taken in order to weaken the activities of these armed groups.
No reason and no excuse can be accepted for these groups to pick guns and create the current abuses, massacres and humanitarian crisis in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
It is therefore our hope that the United States of America will also convince others stakeholders including the United Nations and other nations to take similar sanctions, and the same sanction also individuals who are based in the United States of America who support these groups.
At the same sanctions are imposed against these armed groups, we do not see much being done against Rwanda and Uganda who support them but also against UNHCR which has managed them in refugee camps both in Uganda and in Rwanda, most of the fighters continue to benefit from the UNHCR relief aid.
While this is a first step, more actions should also be considered.
Thanks
