We call upon urgent release of 10 prodemocracy activists in Goma the democratic republic of Congo

Urgent call for the immediate and unconditional release of 10 Pro-Democracy Activists members of LUCHA RDC detained in Goma on this Thursday 9th January 2025.

Pro-Democracy Activists in Goma yesterday when they were arrested by the Police,

On Thursday January 9th, 2025 members of LUCHA DRC held a demonstration in Goma in order to denounce the ongoing war in North Kivu especially the lack of a clear defense plan of the Congolese Government to attack M23 rebel group backed by Rwanda. According to the information which reached us, 10 among the demonstrators were arrested and are now detained at P2 offices in Goma (Police Intelligence Department). Some were tortured during the brutal arrest and are detained in inhuman situation where they lack everything.

The demonstration is part of various activities being planned by actors of the Civil Society aiming at putting pressure to the Democratic Republic of Congo Government and the United Nations to end this war which has now lasted for three years a severe consequences on local population.

Since this war started in 2022 the DRC Government has prioritized the diplomatic approach claiming that it will bring peace in the Great Lakes, yet the war in the not in the Great Lakes Region, the war is in Eastern DRC, in the way the hopes for a peace deal between Rwanda and DRC collapsed in Angola in December 2024 and up to now, no one knows what next especially that all actors placed hope in this initiative. In response M23 launched different attacks which have displaced hundreds of people as the DRC Government has remained insensitive to the need to ensure the security of its people.

We call upon the immediate and unconditional release of all these pro-democracy human rights activists,

We also call upon the generosity of people of good will to contribute towards our cause to raise funds which will help human rights defenders at risks,

Thanks
