The 11 pro-democracy activists detained in Goma were released this evening at 7pm

We appreciate the release of the 11 Activists of La LUCHA a Pro-Democracy Pressure Group in Goma, the Democratic Republic of Congo

Six days back these activists were arrested in Goma during a demonstration which aimed at asking the Independent Electoral Commission to issue quality Voter’s Cards to people. They were then put in Prison since Thursday 24th August 2023.

Today Tuesday August 29th, 2023 they were finally released at around 7pm and are now free to stay home. While we take note of their release, we are so much concerned by the current culture of human rights violation in North Kivu and the intolerance against any activity towards the freedom of expression.

We call upon the military authorities to punish all those who are attacking the freedom of expression.

We thank all those who advocated for their release and call upon more efforts to be done in order to advocate for the release of others who are still in detention centers in Goma and elsewhere in North Kivu.
